My Daily Holistic Face Care Routine
/Holistic Skincare for Acne-prone Skin
This is an article I’ve put off for a while now.
But it’s been requested enough, and I’ve found a consistent enough routine that I’m finally willing to put out what exactly a daily skincare routine looks like for me.
As has been mentioned on here before, I deal with bad acne.
Or… I used to. Now, I know what causes it and can prevent / anticipate it, most of the time.
This is due to a few things, including my PCOS causing higher testosterone than is normal for women.
A large part of this “health journey” of mine has been dedicated to figuring that out. It sounds like a trifling issue to someone with a more severe ailment, but acne really. Freaking. Sucks.
I used to buy all of my skincare at the Farmer’s Market. I was still breaking out from my “natural” makeup. Then, I found out about Beautycounter.
Say what you will about this brand, they know their stuff. They’ve never sold themselves as “all-natural,” because they aren’t.
But Beautycounter ensures thorough testing of each of their products and has vowed that they’ll never include a certain list of common toxins in most beauty products. That list can be found here.
Anyway, I love this brand a lot and there’s a longer resource about it here.
But this isn’t just a Beautycounter gush-fest. I’m also an avid exerciser, which means I sweat a lot.
Honestly, I just sweat more than the average person – even if I’m training someone else. Or if I step outside and it’s too hot. You get the point.
That said, I use a combination of brands & products to get my skin into the best shape it’s ever been.
That’s what this resource is all about. I hope you find it helpful!
Morning Holistic Skincare Routine
Making sure to “wipe off the sleep,” as I call it, is a great way to set yourself up for a clean skin day.
Plus, it’s just refreshing!
Each morning goes like this for me:
Scrub off with the Beautycounter Countercontrol Clear Pore Cleanser first. Then
Soak down with the Beautycounter Charcoal Cleansing Bar
Top my skin with the Beautycounter Countercontrol Instant Matte Toner, allow it to dry &
Add the Beautycounter Countercontrol All-over Acne Treatment (whole face). Allow this to dry &
Add FRÉ Skincare Glow Me moisturizer.
I like the FRÉ Glow Me over Beautycounter because it’s lighter and has a slight tint, which helps smooth out the acne scars I have from when it was really bad in high school.
A few mornings per week, I’ll scrub off with step 1 and towel off.
I’ll then mix up a little Four Sigmatic Detox Face Mask & Tonic and apply it as a face mask. Leave this on for about 10 minutes and rinse off with the Charcoal Cleansing Bar.
Proceed through the rest of the steps as normal.
I’d never done a morning face mask until buying this product in March, and I LOVE having it as a part of my routine.
Something just feels luxurious about starting your day with a mask on while you meditate.
On that note: I also meditate for 15 minutes each morning with my face in front of a small Joovv Go Red Light Therapy device.
I believe this has helped make my pores a bit smaller and it has definitely helped reduce some of my fine smile lines. I may be young, but I smile a LOT.
My skin feels more taught since incorporating this into my meditation in April.
Natural Post-workout Skincare
Getting serious about my post-workout skincare has been a GAME CHANGER for me.
I guess I really had no idea how much I was sweating & leaving that gunk on my face before!
After a workout, I always:
Rinse my face off in the gym locker room, with whatever hand soap is available. This is enough to get the initial crap off of your face so that it doesn’t have time to set on your drive home. And, of course, if you go from the gym straight to work – you can skip this and go to the next step.
Once home, I apply the Detox Me mask by FRÉ. This is specifically made for post-workout detox, and I’ll do this step 3-4 times per week. You only need to leave it on for about 5 minutes, so I’ll just put it on and hop in the shower with it.
In the shower, I use Revive Me by FRÉ to rinse off any excess sweat I might have left on my face after the initial rinse at the gym.
After my shower, I’ll re-apply the Beautycounter Countercontrol Instant Matte Toner and either FRÉ Glow Me moisturizer or Revive Me moisturizer. That decision is made based on whether I’m putting makeup on after this. (If I am putting on makeup, I use the Revive Me – no need to put on a BB cream moisturizer AND foundation!)
Since I mentioned makeup in this step, I’ll touch on that.
I largely use Beautycounter makeup. It’s the first safe makeup I’ve used that applies and works as well as “traditional” dirty makeup, without making me break out.
If the makeup I’m using isn’t Beautycounter, it’s lipstick from The Body Shop or Kiko Milano.
Other than lipstick, though, I truly only use Beautycounter. That applies to stage makeup and day-to-day; it’s that good!
Evening Holistic Face Care Routine
This is a key part, too, because you always end up collecting a bunch of debris from the day on your face!
If you do nothing else, please get yourself a stellar evening face care routine.
We’re all begging you. It’s basic hygiene.
The routine I’ve found for myself is:
Scrub off with the Beautycounter Countercontrol Clear Pore Cleanser first. Then
Soak down with the Beautycounter Charcoal Cleansing Bar
Top my skin with the Beautycounter Countercontrol Instant Matte Toner, allow it to dry &
Add the Recover Me by FRÉ for overnight skin repair (every other night) OR
Add the Revive Me by FRÉ moisturizer
Once all is dry, use the Beautycounter Countercontrol SOS Acne Spot Treatment on any current acne flares.
Yes, the evening looks a lot like the morning. The last few steps show a huge difference overnight, though!
I’ve noticed a significant improvement in my acne scars since beginning to use the Recover Me overnight serum from FRÉ.
It’s designed to help spur even more overnight collagen production in the skin. Our bodies already do this naturally (which is why you might notice that your skin seems nicest in the morning).
By working with that system, the Recover Me just gives it an extra boost. Plus, it’s moisturizing enough for me that I don’t need to use a moisturizer on top of it.
And that SOS Acne Spot Treatment from Beautycounter really does knock down pimples fast!
If I’m having a particularly bad breakout (usually from eating something that’ll flare me up), I’ll also use the Beautycounter Countercontrol All-over Acne Treatment at night. But that’s emergencies only.
Final Thoughts About Holistic Skincare
This is something that’s very personalized.
Clearly, I have a specific routine that’s taken me a while to dial in. And one of the reasons I took so long to share this resource is because I’m constantly experimenting!
But, like I mentioned in the beginning, this series seems to be working steadily since I figured it out. So, here it is.
