Since this website has a growing product reviews page, I do my best to keep up with products of all kinds in the health market. I've been hearing about Rootz Nutrition for a while now, and have watched the company grow via other bloggers' posts about them and other companies' willingness to pick them up for sale. But I hadn't had the pleasure of trying them until recently.
Through my own personal experimentation since "going paleo," I've actually made the unfortunate discovery of an egg white intolerance (shoutout to the Ditch Your Nutritionist program for coaching me through to figure that one out!) That being said, I rarely eat whole eggs anymore (*cue tears*) because I now know the whites are the cause of most of my acne flare-ups. So, this review only covers the Paleo Energizing Superfood offered by Rootz. Their protein powders are all "true paleo" and egg-white based. Top of the line for people with dairy or whey intolerances, but not for me.
However, they do have a product I was very interested in and very tolerant of all the ingredients involved. Enter:
Paleo Energizing Superfood
This product is delicious. Let's just start with that. It's got a tanginess to it that isn't too strong and is balanced out with a sweet aftertaste. It's fruity, but not overwhelming. The flavor is easily made stronger or diluted, depending on how much water or other liquid you mix it with.
As with many drink powders, this one takes a minute or so with good stirring to dissolve well. Keep in mind that if you're not mixing with AT LEAST 8oz of water, you're likely not going to get a smooth consistency. I tend to use as little water as possible to try and make a strong flavor, but still obtain a uniformly dissolved consistency. That being said, texture varies depending on how you like to take your drink. But in all honesty, if you decide to mix with only a little liquid, the flavor isn't so overpowering that a few undissolved chunks will blow you away when you drink one.
When incorporating into my routine, I naturally began using this as a pre-workout. Other fitness junkies who use this seemed to take it in that sense, so I figured I'd jump on the chance to use a pre-workout supplement that didn't have nasty ingredients in it. Even when I didn't care about what the ingredients were in my food, "normal" pre-workouts scared me. I'd never buy those mixed powders. That should say something about most other supplements. The closest thing I'd use (and still sometimes do) is a pure carnosine powder to enhance beta-alanine production. Sorry, science. Basically, it buffers acid in the muscle so you can theoretically do more reps before failing.
But I digress. This stuff is a killer pre-workout. Unlike the carnosine supplement, I don't get an uncomfortable tingly feeling in my extremities 10 minutes after ingesting it. Instead, I take it about 10-20 minutes before beginning my workout, and find myself energized for a lot longer into my session than I normally would be. I intentionally take this Superfood on days that I know will be long and the workout is later than I'd like, so I know the energy boost is coming from the product. Instead of hitting a wall or getting bored toward the end of my workout, I actually push through what I've planned for myself and actually end up adding more on because I just feel so good and can keep going. That prolonged energy WITHOUT the "buzz & crash" combo brought on by coffee or carnosine (or, I'm assuming, other pre-workout supplements) is a huge advantage this product has over any others on the market.
If you're not huge into hard workouts, this product will still benefit you in so many ways. As hard as we try to get that lovely natural-food-sustained energy that decreases the chance for an afternoon crash, sometimes you just can't avoid it when you're busily running around all the time. And drinking coffee at 3pm just isn't the greatest idea if you're trying to get to bed at a decent hour that night. The energy I've always received from the Paleo Energizing Superfood has always been prolonged, but never a sudden jolt or a sudden decrease. It's a kind of energy that allows you to get more work done but if you want to sit and relax, it's not going to keep you from calming down. It's almost more of a focus blend. So if you want to focus on something less physically taxing, you can do that without getting jittery from still having some of the Superfood in your system. That's pretty darn cool.
I think it's pretty clear that overall, I love this product. Give it a go for yourself and let me know how it benefits you!
